North Africa is a perfect place for filming; it has sweeping vistas, it has seas of sand, it has the Mediterranean, it has new buildings and old alleyways in ancient and bustling cities. In fact, all the attractions and opportunities that make it a great place for filming also makes North Africa great for holidays. We examine the top ten film locations that, along with the other attractions, mean that any North African holiday will be as exciting as it is exotic…
10. The English Patient
The English Patient was filmed in Mahdia and Nefta in Tunisia. The shifting sands and small oasis town feel of the locations almost became another character in the film as the love story played out over them.
9. The Life of Brian
A less straight-laced film at number 9, with Monty Python’s Life of Brian. The film was filmed almost exclusively on location in Tunisia, and includes the Amphitheatre at El Djem, the Kasbah of Sousse and several other towns and areas. One of their most controversial and best films, Brian included all the ‘Pythons’ in various parts as well as half of ‘Goon’ Spike Milligan. Only half of the footage with his character is actually Spike. The pythons met him and got him to film some scenes, but he himself was on a holiday in North Africa, and left to carry on his holiday with only half of his part done!
8. Cleopatra
As you’d imagine, parts of this epic were filmed on location in Egypt. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor engage in epic war and love scenes close to the Pyramids and over the desert sands – a classic film, it’s low on our list because most holidays to North Africa that go to Egypt will go for the history of the Pyramids and the middle kingdom rather than to see where the stars may have stood.

7. Death on the Nile
A Peter Ustinov classic, Death on the Nile is a great film that seems almost like an advert for holidays in North Africa and Egypt all on its own! The film shows all of the main Egyptian sights, from Luxor to Giza, and is scenic and riveting.
6. Black Hawk Down
Black Hawk Down was filmed almost entirely in Morocco, using many of the soldiers who were actually in the raid the film depicts. The real life battle took place in Mogadishu, but those looking for the locations on a North African holiday will enjoy trips to Kénitra Airbase and Rabbat in Morocco where the bulk of the film was made.
5. Laurence of Arabia.
With “Arabia” in the title you’d think that this 60′s David Lean classic would have been filmed somewhere on the Arabian peninsula. However, most was filmed in Spain and several other locations such as California, Jordan, Morocco and Wales. The Moroccan aspect was filmed in Ouarzazate, a famous city in southern Morocco that is more castle or citadel than city.
4. Gladiator
A more modern epic, Gladiator also filmed several of its scenes in Ouarzazate, the ancient roman architecture fitting in with the run down province where Maximus becomes a Gladiator for the first time. Ouarzazate is well worth a visit on a Holiday in North Africa, for its own history and culture and for its long history of film production.
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones always chooses the most interesting places to go on ‘holiday’. The North African city of Sousse was the location for some of the Raiders of the Lost Ark shoot, in particular the famous scene where Inde comes up against a sword master and lazily draws his gun and shoot him rather than get up close. There was a whole scene planned out for this fight, but Harrison Ford (and everyone else in the cast and crew apart from Spielberg) had very bad diarrhoea, and told the director “Why doesn’t he just shoot him and get it over and done with?”
2. Star Wars
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away was actually 1977 and Tunisia. The sweeping sands and rocky crags of the country made it perfect for the desert plant of Tatooine in George Lucas’s space epic, and the set for Luke Skywalker’s home is a popular tourist destination for fans on holiday in North Africa.
1. Casablanca
Casablanca is the perfect movie from North Africa, with one small problem; none of it was filmed there! While cheating a little, the film still comes number one in our list as you can visit the city and go to Rick’s Café Américain, a tribute bar in the same style as the original set. A great place and city to visit on your holidays to North Africa.

Hardy’s Conception of Tragedy
Introduction:
Thomas Hardy was famous novelist during the late Victorian age. He touched many aspects of life, he was the man who struggling against invincible forces that caused unfortunates of the human beings. Let’s have an overview of some important aspects of Hardy’s novel “The Return to the Native”
Concept of Tragedy:
Hardy’s novels are expressive of this conception of tragedy. In the return of the Native, Nature guides the people living in the Egdon Heath. Series of mischance do not allow different characters to understand one another.Eustasia is destroyed because she fails to know her real self.Simliar is the case with Tess. The overpowering force reveals itself through Nature, Chance and mistake in character. Jude is also ruined only because he has contradictory desires. He preaches to achieve knowledge, but begins to indulge in love. He fails to decide whom he loves more, and consequently is divided between tow women.Henchard’s case in The Mayor of Cater bridge is not different.
The Mayor of Casterbridge has been subtitled as the story of a man of character, and we realize that he is really a man of character. He is strong, powerful, hardworking and strict in decision. He swears not to touch wine, and for twenty years he sticks to this oath that makes of his mind to achieve honour, and he achieves it. But in spite of good points in his character he is not saved from that controlling hostile law working is the plan of the universe. He does things with good motives but the consequences are always against him. He remarries his wife to compensate the troubles of seventeen years, but since the very day, his position begins to decline.
He persuades Farfrae to remain with him so that his crops and the general condition of the town may prosper. But the result is quite different.Farfrae becomes the very cause of his downfall .On finding his wife and man like Farfrae, Henchard thinks that he is lucky, but the poor man does not know that it is the very beginning of his ill luck. The same hostile force works through Nature. The crop fails and the whole town is put to poverty. Then a long series of mischance goes against every effort of Henchard. He forces Elizabeth Jane to accept him as her father.

But on the very night, he finds that Elizabeth is not his real daughter. His behavior with the girls becomes insulting and unnecessarily bad. The result is that the girl develops a sense of hatred for him, and denies love to him, when he comes to her in the end of the novel. The Lucetta sends for Henchard but by chance he is delayed. Meanwhile Farfrae goes to see Elizabeth at Lucetta’s house.Lucetta falls in love with Farfrae, and by chance Henchard is deprived of this love. So throughout the novel, we feel the existence of a power working against Henchard, who is the symbol of mankind in the universe.
Hardy’s best novels are tragedies. In the formation of his views about human beings in the universe, certain factors played a great role. By nature he was a pessimist. Desolated places, dark corners, dead bodies were the objects of his interest. Somehow of the other, he had an idea in his mind that human existence in this universe is useless, insignificant and futile.
Moreover, he was an ardent lover of Greek dramas. In the Greek drams, tragedies hold a high place. These tragedies show that however great man may be some weak point in his character or nature is sure lead to him to destruction. Hardy saw this point realized in life. He witnessed the fall of great men because of some little errors in their designs. The Hardy’s age it was an age of doubt and turmoil. With the introduction of Darwin’s theory of Evolution, old and established religious concepts were changed. Religion had been preaching that the universe is guided by God who is very fatherly and kind to human beings; life is the main part of God’s plan in the universe.
But science explained with concrete examples that the universe is controlled by impersonal laws of nature; no moral order exists in the plan of the universe. Darwin showed that life continues on the earth through blind forces and that the whole surroundings are against life. So in this background, we are all able to understand Hardy’s views about human destiny in this universe. His opinion is that human effort in this world leads to destruction; happy are those who do not try to improve themselves, who are stoic like animals, who do not protect against the scheme of nature, and who leave themselves to the stream of circumstances.
In Hardy’s view, there is some impersonal, resisting, external, sinister and malignant force in the universe. These forces are either against man’s efforts or it is indifferent to them. This power frustrates every effort on the part of man to improve himself and his lot. This superior blind force takes three forms in the Novels of Hardy; nature, chance, contradictory human desires. Nature means atmosphere, surrounding and society, Chance means extra human occurrence. By contradictory desires Hardy means that human beings do not know their real nature. They run after what is harmful to them, and the result is frustration, dejection, death and destruction.
Henchard’s wife is separated from him by death: his friend and helper Farfrae turns against him; Elizabeth Jane begins to hate him; his past history is known to everybody in Casterbridge; his crops fail through negligence and bad weather; and his credit is spoiled by the foolish fellow Jopp. In the end, we see his is left with nothing, and he cries out:
“ Here and everywhere be folk dying before their time like frosted leaves, though wanted by their friends, the country and the world ; while I , an outcast , an encumbered of the ground, wanted by none and despised by all, live on against my will” (chapter 44).These lines reveal Hardy’s conception of tragedy to a great extent.

Just what is poetry? You might have read several pieces as part of your studies in the formal curriculum or received cards and gifts with literal lines expressing the thoughts of the giver. In essence, this is a technique of using language to create emotive content that is different from common prose. The writer, who is also known as a poet, uses words carefully in order to depict the feelings behind the piece. For that reason, he or she can break a few rules of grammar common with the prose method. He or she can use poetic devices such as repetition and verse and rhymes as long as it enhances the flow as well as the message therein. There are different ways of creating these artistic messages and some differ especially when traditional methods are brought in from various parts of the world.
Essentially, almost every community in the world used poems to pass information from one generation to the next as well as amongst friends and age mates. That is why this literal method has survived the test of time and it currently offers employment to people who can coin unique verses and turn them to songs and recitals. One of the benefits of poetry is a chance to pass a message in a language that excites people or one that is hard to forget. When you get a piece in prose, the crux of the matter might not stand out like in the case of a few lines that concentrate on the message. This helps in absorption of the content and enhances greater understanding than in the case of other types of literature.
On the same note, they help in saying everything in minimal words. For example, when sending messages of appreciation, using a short verse is better and powerful than trying to use all the grammar you can get your hands on. Find works by famous poets such as Robert Frost, John Donne, Emily Dickinson and Lord Byron amongst others. These pieces have attained international recognition as well as various literal awards. These are individuals who left a mark in the poetry world because of their exemplary works. However, you should note that there are various poetry genres. From the structure to the purpose, there are differences and if you want to venture in this field or are looking for a variety to send to friends and family, it is wise to know some of the common kind.
Realize that there are special types of poems. These cover an assortment of topics from love to friendship, humor, nature and activities involved in life such as war, politics, leadership as well as finance and education. Keep in mind that they suit different age groups meaning you can find ones that relate to your age or to the age of the person who will receive the poems. This ensures the message is understood easily and the context relates to the individual. Overall, there is a verse for every person and every occasion whether it’s for a wedding, birthday or even for anniversary celebrations.
In She Walks in Beauty, Caroline Kennedy has once again marshaled the gifts of our greatest poets to pay a very personal tribute to the human experience, this time to the complex and fascinating subject of womanhood. Inspired by her own reflections on more than fifty years of life as a young girl, a woman, a wife, and a mother, She Walks in Beauty draws on poetry’s eloquent wisdom to ponder the many joys and challenges of being a woman.
Kennedy has divided the collection into sections that signify to her the most notable milestones, passages, and universal experiences in a woman’s life, and she begins each of these sections with an introduction in which she explores and celebrates the most important elements of life’s journey.
The collection includes works by Elizabeth Bishop, Sharon Olds, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Mary Oliver, Pablo Neruda, W. H. Auden, Adrienne Rich, Sandra Cisneros, Anne Sexton, W. S. Merwin, Dorothy Parker, Queen Elizabeth I, Lucille Clifton, Naomi Shahib Nye, and W. B. Yeats. Whether it’s falling in love, breaking up, friendship, marriage, motherhood, or growing old, She Walks in Beauty is a priceless resource for anyone, male or female, who wants a deeper understanding and appreciation of what it means to be a woman.
George Gordon, Lord Byron
I She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow’d to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
II One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impair’d the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
III And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

“To My Dear and Loving Husband” was written by America’s first female poet, the Puritan, Anne Bradstreet. In fact, Anne Bradstreet is one of only a handful of female American poets during the first 200 years of America’s history. After Bradstreet, one can list only Phillis Wheatley, the 18th century black female poet, Emma Lazarus, the 19th century poet whose famous words appear on the Statue of Liberty, and the 19th century Emily Dickinson, America’s most famous female poet.
“To My Dear and Loving Husband” has several standard poetic features. One is the two line rhyme scheme. Another is the anaphora, the repetition of a phrase, in the first three lines. And a third is the popular iambic pentameter.
Iambic pentameter is characterized by an unrhymed line with five feet or accents. Each foot contains an unaccented syllable and an accented syllable, as in “da Dah, da Dah, da Dah, da Dah, da Dah.”
The subject of Anne Bradstreet’s love poem is her professed love for her husband. She praises him and asks the heavens to reward him for his love. The poem is a touching display of love and affection and extraordinarily uncommon for the Puritan era of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in which Anne Bradstreet lived.
Puritan women were expected to be reserved, domestic, and subservient to their husbands. They were not expected or allowed to exhibit their wit, charm, intelligence, or passion. John Winthrop, the Massachusetts governor, once remarked that women who exercised wit or intelligence were apt to go insane.
Anne Bradstreet was born Anne Dudley in 1612 in England. She married Simon Bradstreet when she was 16 and they both sailed with her family to America in 1630. The difficult, cold voyage to America took 3 months to complete. John Winthrop was also a passenger on the trip. The voyage landed in Boston and the passengers joined the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The men in Anne Bradstreet’s family were managers and politicians. Both her father and her husband became Massachusetts governors. Her husband, Simon, often traveled for weeks throughout the colony as its administrator.
Anne Bradstreet’s poem, “To My Dear and Loving Husband,” was a response to her husband’s absence.
Very little is known about Anne Bradstreet’s life in Massachusetts. There are not portraits of her and she does not even have a grave marker. She and her family moved several times, each time further away from Boston into the frontier. Anne and Simon had 8 children during a 10 year period, and all the children survived healthy and safe, a remarkable accomplishment considering the health and safety hazards of the period.
Anne Bradstreet was highly intelligent and largely self-educated. She took herself seriously as an intellectual and a poet, reading widely in history, science, art, and literature. However, as a good Puritan woman, Bradstreet did not make her accomplishments public.
Bradstreet wrote poetry for herself, family, and friends, never meaning to publish them. Consider that her friend, Anne Hutchinson was intellectual, educated and led women’s prayer meetings where alternative religious beliefs were discussed. She was labeled a heretic and banished from the colony. Hutchinson eventually died in an Indian attack. Is it any wonder that Anne Bradstreet was hesitant to publish her poetry and call attention to herself?
Anne Bradstreet’s early poems were secretly taken by her brother-in-law to England and published in a small volume when she was 38. The volume sold well in England, but the poems were not nearly as accomplished as her later works.
Bradstreet’s later works were not published during her lifetime. Her poems about her love for her husband were private and personal, meant to be shared with her family and friends group only.
Though her health was frequently a concern, especially during childbirth, Anne Bradstreet lived until 60 years of age.
Enjoy “To My Dear and Loving Husband,” a remarkable accomplishment.
To My Dear and Loving Husband
If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were lov’d by wife, then thee;
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me ye women if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole Mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that Rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee, give recompence.
Thy love is such I can no way repay,
The heavens reward thee manifold I pray.
Then while we live, in love let’s so persever,
That when we live no more, we may live ever.
